“I’m a contributor, not a guru. As soon as I gave myself permission to contribute to the conversation, and not have to be a guru or expert, then my business became fun. If you really care about a topic, be a contributor. Who cares if you don’t know everything. You don’t have to be the best to make a difference to someone.” -Denise Duffield-Thomas
I started this blog as a chronicle of all of my attempts, ranging from incredibly awesome to epic fails, to live a happy, successful, fulfilling and uplifting life, and with my storytelling, I hope to inspire others to do the same.
Do I expect to discover some startling new truth about life? Nope. People have been doing life for thousands of years, and most great truths have already been laid out by people more brilliant than me. But, despite that, I know that while I can know something intellectually, actually DOING it is often the hard part. So that’s what I’m working toward here. DOING things, in the hopes that it helps YOU do things too. And I don’t think a person can ever run out of things to Do, or Try, in order to improve.
I also subscribe to Gretchen Rubin‘s theory that she states on the first page of her “Happiness Project”:
I often learn more from one person’s highly idiosyncratic experiences than I do from sources that detail universal principles or cite up-to-date studies. I find greater value in what specific individuals tell me worked for them than in any other kind of argument – and that’s true even when we seem to have nothing in common.
So, bottom line: I hope that, in reading some of this stuff about my life, I can inspire and encourage you to also work on doing ‘you’ – whatever that may mean to you.
I semi-retired from my career when I was 29, and was financially independent (some might say retired) by 33. If you’d like to know more about how I did that – check out my story.
I’ve also lost 95 pounds naturally with diet and exercise, and kept it off. I’m still chasing the last 15 pounds or so. If you’d like to know more about my weight loss journey – check out that story.
At this point in my life, I know how to make good things happen. I certainly plan to share over time how I have accomplished major life goals, and also make more good things happen in the meantime. I’m sure in the process I’ll have some setbacks, and I promise to share those too. Few journeys are linear, after all.
